Going On Vacation With Your Teenagers
While taking a vacation with young children is often difficult and stressful, going on a trip with teenagers presents an entirely new set of issues. How do you keep them entertained? Of course you want them to have a good time, but teenagers are notorious for having quick mood swings that parents often don’t understand. Still, it is possible to have a fun family vacation even with your teenagers in tow. Take the following advice to heart the next time you have a getaway planned.
Before setting anything up, get your teenager involved in the planning process. Ask them where they would like to go and what they would like to do. Make sure they realize up front, though, that no one person is going to dictate the details of the trip. It will be a compromise and has to involve trying to find a place that has a little something for everyone. If your teenager is on board from the very beginning, you are much more likely to have a good time together.
Choose a hotel that is in the heart of whatever city you are in. While budget may be a factor, selecting something too far out of the way will lead to a boring experience for your entire family. By choosing a prime location, you can quickly get from place to place, which may help to avoid family tension during the length of your stay. Also, depending on how comfortable with the area you are, you may be able to allow your teenager to do a little exploring. The buddy system is always best, though, so if you don’t have at least two older children, consider either having you or your spouse accompany your teen when they are walking around.
Keep yourself focused on the positive parts of your trip. You and your teen are likely to get upset with one another at some point or another. If you make a big deal out of it, your child is likely to do the same. Instead, put it behind you as soon as you can and focus on having fun together.
Be flexible when it comes to your rules. While you still do need to have some structure for your teenager, you don’t need it to be quite the same as it is at home. After all, this is their vacation, too. Don’t worry as much about their diet or how much TV they watch in the hotel room. Simply let loose and have fun. Also, if your teenager would like to sleep in one morning instead of sightseeing, don’t fight them on it. They deserve to have a few choices about what they do on their vacation, and if you try to impose your will constantly, no one is going to have any fun.
Many people feel a little anxiety at the thought of going on vacation with an infant, but the truth is, taking a trip with teenagers can be hard, too. By using the tips provided in this article, you can ensure that your entire family has a great time together.
