You should at least be able to ask for directions and purchase something. Keep in mind that people will be a lot more friendly if you make the effort to speak their language. You should also learn more about the culture of the country where you are going: this will help you understand certain things you might see and avoid offending people. While you are abroad, do your best to blend in. Consider buying clothes once you get there and always study your itinerary in advance so you do not look like a lost tourist.
